Founding Old Boys Meet for Lunch

Twenty Clifton Old Boys gathered for a convivial and leisurely lunch in Kloof on Friday, 23 April.  No fewer than seven of them were among the very first to arrive at the school when it was started in the winter of 1942; the others for the most part were men who had been here in the late 40s and in the 1950s.

Wonderful stories were told and memories of ‘legends’ from the past exchanged.  It was not unheard of in those days for parents to drop off a young son at the start of his Standard Two (Grade 4) year and return to the school only once more, to collect him at the end of his Standard Five or Six year.

Almost all travelled to and from Clifton by rail, from Richards Bay on the north coast and Port Shepstone in the south, to the railhead at Durban where all entrained for the journey up the main Johannesburg line to Nottingham Road.

We have been encouraged by the success of this occasion to plan similar events for past pupils in the months and years to come.
